Dr. Derby received his Ph. D. in history from Harvard in 1940, came to American University in 1947 as Assistant Professor of history, and became Assistant to the President of the University in 1948. He served the University as Provost, Dean of Administration, University Dean, Vice Pres.:Dean of Faculties, and at the timeof his death was Secretary of the University.
